Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy students bring home Pan-Am Golds!

Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy students bring home Pan-Am Golds!

October 1st, 2011 the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) held their No-Gi Pan Championships (formerly known as Pan-Ams), in New York City.

Some of the Best grapplers from all over the World came to display their grappling prowess.

The day started off with some amazing matches and didn’t slow down. Hour after hour the grappling became more technical and more exciting as the mats ran from Blue Belt up to Black Belts.

Some of the standout competitors were World Champion Brazilians Caio Terra, Lucas Lepri and Kayron Gracie.

Indiana had several grapplers representing our state.

Aaron Johnson who won his division, defeating Timothy Almeida in the final.  Aaron is the Head Wrestling Coach at the Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy (Fight Hub HeadQuarters).

Joel Blanton who trains primarily at Impact Zone BJJ/MMA in Lafayette, IN, also won his division! Joel’s first match was a very difficult one, facing a friend and former teammate.  Joel was able to overcome the mental burden of facing a former teammate his first match and go on to completely dominate the division.

Mick Williams of Vortex Martial Arts in Bloomington, IN had a completely dominant performance, not giving any of his opponents a chance until being stopped in the final match. Mick brought home a 2nd Place Medal!

One thing these 3 grapplers have in common is that they are the ONLY GRAPPLERS FROM INDIANA to bring home Pan AM Medals, from the 2011 No-Gi Pan Ams.

Another common factor is that they are ALL 3 members of Team James Clingerman.

While Aaron Johnson trains daily at Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Joel (from Lafayette) and Mick (from Bloomington) both travel over 1 hour to train with Master Coach James Clingerman.

Indiana Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy’s 30 Day Challenge

30 Day Challenge

Here at the IBJJA we like to try things out for 30 Days.  You never know what kind of life changes you can make in a single 30 Day Challenge.  For example we offer a 30 Day Free Trail for you to come in and try out our classes!  We challenge you to come in and try it out, we are sure you will love it!

James and AJ’s 30 Day Challenge

So, we decided to go Raw for 30 days.  All Raw!  We are only eating raw fruits and vegetables and raw nuts.  Nothing cooked or processed!  As I write this we are on Day 15 – right about 1/2 way!  I’m not saying it’s easy, but what worth having comes easy?  We feel great!  We decided to do it for the cleanse, but losing weight is a perk!  James is down 12 pounds, and I am down 8!  Not bad in 15 days!

It helps that we have done some research on some  Raw recipes!  It’s better than eating salad for every meal!  Here’s a picture of a pie we made and a brownie with strawberry-banana pudding.

IMG 0676 224x300 Indiana Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academys 30 Day ChallengeIMG 0677 300x224 Indiana Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academys 30 Day Challenge

It’s all very good, and good for you!  We’ve been eating the pie for breakfast!  Why not?!?!?  It’s basically fruits and nuts!

The Next 30 Day Challenge

Ah… the game!  This is one of my favorite 30 Day Challenges!  It’s a lot of fun, and it really makes you think!  The idea kind of came from Team Lloyd Irvin.  They can’t say “Mine”.  If they do they owe 10 push-ups.  It doesn’t matter where you are or what’s going on, you have to do your 10!  I was at a Shawn Hammonds concert once (you know, Black Belt Shawn Hammonds – also a Country Music singer!  You should check him out!) and he introduced James in the audience as a “good friend of mine”.  I’m sure Lloyd would be proud to know that he did the push-ups right then and there on stage!  I’m sure the rest of the audience was very confused, but we were cracking up laughing!

So on to our version – where I like the premise, I wanted to make it our own.  So for 30 Days (July 1st – 30th) you can’t say can’t or can not.  It’s such a limiting word/phrase.  It almost becomes a knee-jerk reaction.  Instead of trying something, you automatically say that you can’t.  Find another way – say “It’s hard for me.” or “I’m struggling with this.”  NO MORE CAN’T!!!

So your 30 Day Challenge is to not say CAN’T or CAN NOT from July 1st – 30th.  Any time you do, no matter where you are, what you are doing, who you are with, whatever… if you say – drop and give us 10!

Feel free to get other people in your life in on it!  Be sure to call people out when you hear it!

This 30 Day Challenge – like all the rest – will make you a better person for having done it!

UFC Vet, Chris Price receives his BJJ Blue Belt from James Clingerman!

Chris “The Exorcist” Price was thrown to the wolves early in his career, being pushed into the UFC after only 9 months of training. He has had a tough road since, but has amassed a Professional Mixed Martial Arts record of  18-3.

Chris has spent a great portion of his time perfecting his technique at the Fight Hub Headquarters in Greenwood, Indiana.  “The Exorcist” is still an active Mixed Martial Arts competitor who also competes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission grappling matches.

Coach James Clingerman, promoted Chris to a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after class and gave him the choice to “Run the Gauntlet” or get thrown by everyone in class (as is the usual tradition).  Chris chose “the one that hurts more”.-  THE GAUNTLET!

Take a look at the video!

Hopefully we’ll all see Chris Price back in the UFC soon!

That’s where Groundworx BJJ and Boxing in Fishers, IN was born.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Saved my life!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu saved my life!

BUT, not in the usual self defense way.

On February 20th, 2000 while sitting at a stoplight, I was shot in the head by a 9mm bullet!
X Ray Right side view 291x300 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Saved my life!
A random guy sitting in the passenger’s seat of the car next to me, decided to try to provoke me.  When he was unsuccessful, he pulled a gun and immediately fired.
The bullet struck me in the cheekbone and drove its way into my skull, missing my carotid artery by less than a centimeter.
The impact was so great that it knocked me into my passenger seat, breaking my seatbelt retractor!
I laid there for a brief second, blinded by the concussion and blood of the blow. The ring in my ears was deafening.  I didn’t know what my assailant’s next move was.  I didn’t know if he was coming over to finish me off or if I had bullets whizzing by my head.
Not waiting for my senses to return, I hit the gas and drove about 2 blocks honking my horn.
I finally clipped another car and figured that I had someone’s attention.
When I got out of my car, the guy (whose car I had struck) was already on the phone with the police.
I started to lean on his car, but after watching the mass amount of blood pouring out of my head, decided that it was kind of rude to bleed all over this guy’s car.
I kneeled down in the road, going over phone numbers and math problems and Jiu-Jitsu techniques in my mind.  I figured I was either going to have brain damage or I was going to die.  My mind was working alright. So, I hoped I was wrong about the dying part.
When the ambulance got there they stripped me down on the freezing road and rushed me to the emergency room.  I ended up getting 2 steel plates in my head to reconstruct my cheekbone.  They were not able to get the bullet out.
The incident left me blind in my left eye, with some ear problems that do affect my balance and hearing.   I’ve had a series of surgeries on my eye over a period of time.
I have 2 steel plates to reconstruct my cheekbone (no, they don’t go off in the airport detector).
I only spent 3 days in the hospital, before they let me go home.  Once I got there, we covered the bedroom windows with dark blackest and I slept for a few days.  It was like being in a cave.
My girlfriend (wife now) AJ was fortunate enough to have a great job that gave her paid time off to stay with me and take me back and forth to my doctor visits, 2-3 times a week.   In the beginning most of the left side of my face was swollen and numb.  At some point the muscles on that side of my face contracted, locking my jaw nearly shut.  I was living on protein shakes and baby food.
Between my physical restricting (no lifting anything over 10lbs. no straining) and the not being able to eat, I lost about 25lbs.  I got down to 150lbs of weak, atrophied muscle.

I was fortunate enough to have a strong support system in my girlfriend, friends and family.  It was an obvious mental struggle going from a very active athletic individual to a disabled, weakling who needed assistance in everything.  I truly believe that a huge part of why I was able to cope with it all was the lessons I had learned through Jiu-Jitsu.  The ability to deal with both physical and mental pressure almost directly translated into what was happening to me, with this shooting.

X Ray Rear view 209x300 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Saved my life!Looking at my BJJ timeline: I started in July of 1997, got my Blue Belt from Royce Gracie in October of 1997.  I received my purple Belt in October of 2001, Brown in October 2004 and Black in October of 2007 all from Mario Roberto.

Fortunately, I was able to take the things that influenced my life and helped me overcome adversity and use those same things to help others.
Without the Martial Arts, I really don’t know where I would be in life.
I’m very proud to operate the Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, to help others achieve goals and learn the same lessons that I learned and continue to learn along my journey.
It is the longest running BJJ/MMA Academy in Central Indiana.

Because I was on my own, without an instructor directly over me for a great deal of my adventure to Black Belt, one of my main resources of information was video tapes.  I decided to share a lot of my knowledge through The Fight Hub.  It is a work in progress that will have FREE online training and product reviews, etc.  It is the only place on the web to get exclusive DVDs, like “The Peruvian Dozen 2.0” and “Mastering The Von Flue Choke”.

Competing was a large part of the path I traveled.  It gave me something to look forward to and a reason to pick up the training and set goals.  With the EXTREME GRAPPLING OPEN (EGO), we are able to give back, by running an extremely competitor friendly series of tournaments.  We usually run 4-6 a year across the Mid-West.

To me the Martial Arts are so much more than a way to beat people up or a fun hobby.  It truly saved my life.
I’m James Clingerman and I just thought I’d share how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu saved my life!

Colosseum Combat with Team James Clingerman

We had a great time last night at Colosseum Combat with Team James Clingerman!

Colosseum Combat is by far one of the top MMA shows in Indiana.  Mark Slater puts on a class act event that is not only full of great match ups, but is also family friendly.  There were kids of all ages there enjoying the fights in safe and exciting environment.

Team James Clingerman had 4 fighters in all compete last night at Colosseum Combat.

We started off with Coach Matt Perry in what may turn out to be his last Amateur fight.  Matt fought a great hard fight that went all three rounds.  In the end he won a Unanimous Decision!  It was a great, very exciting fight!  My only complaint is that they got stood up while Matt was locking up a Von Flue Choke.  The lesson here is not only will your opponent not see it coming, but sometime a ref won’t either…..

Coach Josh Kinser was our first Pro Fighter of the night.  This is a great example of someone sticking to their gameplan.  Josh did exactly what he was suppose to, and knocked the guy out in 13 seconds!!!  It was also some of the best follow up that I’ve seen.  A lot of fighters tend to get a little frozen after they blast someone, but Josh jumped right on him and finished the job.

Up next was our resident Dr – Pro Fighter and Bodog Vet David “The Doctor” Love.  He fought Dustin “The Beast” Neace who is the Title Holder for Colosseum Combat at 145lbs.  David, who just got his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt on January 1st, beat The Beast in the second round by way of Armbar!  It wasn’t until after the fight, that we were told it wasn’t for the Title.  I’m going to have to do some research on this to find out why, I’ll keep you posted in the comments about what I find out.

Time for the Main Event – Dan Head (TUF 12 Vet) vs Ryan “Tank Engine” Thomas (Bellator and UFC Vet).

These are two great fighters.  Ryan landed a kick right off the bat, but nothing damaging.  After all, Coach Dan got kicked by Shaw Bradbury at the start of their fight, that kick was brutal but it didn’t stop Dan.  From there they clinched and Dan had double unders.  Dan got the trip and they went to the ground.  Everything was looking good, but The Tank Engine has great triangles and was able to lock one down on Dan.  It was a great fight, and Ryan is always a class act.  Both of these fighters are destine for big things.

We want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting our guys.  I wish I would have counted how many people were there supporting Team James Clingerman.  It was a great night!

Thanks again to Mark Slater and Colosseum Combat!
