We Support Local Law Enforcement

At Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy (IBJJA), we believe every officer, every corrections professional, every first responder deserves the tools to respond with control, confidence, and safety.

BJJ For Law Enforcement & First Responders

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art or a sport. For law enforcement officers, corrections staff, and first responders in Greenwood, Indianapolis, and surrounding areas, BJJ offers practical, proven benefits.

Mental Resilience & Stress Management

High-stress calls, unpredictable environments, and split-second decisions are part of the job. BJJ helps with mental conditioning, decision making under stress, emotional regulation, and keeping calm in confrontation.

Better Safety for Officers & Communities

By learning control, leverage, ground grappling, and non-striking control methods (where appropriate), officers are often in a better position to resolve conflicts without escalated force. Departments report fewer injuries (to both officers & suspects), fewer Taser or chemical irritant deployments, and overall safer interactions.

We Believe In:

Respect & Service

Being an officer or first responder is demanding; you often put yourself in harm’s way. We honor that commitment.

Better Outcomes

Better training leads to fewer unintended consequences, safer control of incidents, less risk, and less harm.

Community & Trust

When officers train BJJ, they often report more confidence and better ability to de-escalate, both of which build trust with the people they serve.

Fitness & Well-Being

BJJ helps with physical conditioning and mental health. It can be a powerful outlet against the stress of Law Enforcement work.

Real-World Training

Officers, corrections professionals, and first responders are fully integrated into our regular classes, training alongside a diverse group of students in a structured, supportive environment.

Our instruction emphasizes the same principles that matter in the field: control, situational awareness, and sound decision-making under pressure. The end result is efficiency, composure, and the ability to manage threats without unnecessary escalation.

Your journey in Jiu-Jitsu is unique to you. You may have years on the job, or you may be fresh out of the Police Academy. Either way, we adjust classes to your experience level so you can build skill safely.

FAQs

Do I need prior martial arts or fitness background?

Nope! We welcome all levels!

How is BJJ different from standard defensive tactics/use-of-force training?

BJJ focuses on ground control, leverage, positional dominance, and non-striking control, which often lets officers handle situations more safely. It complements (not replaces) tactical training, weapons, and other tools.

Will this help reduce risk/liability?

Absolutely! Fewer injuries, fewer escalated force incidents, more confident officers means a lower likelihood of excessive force complaints.

What gear do I need?

A typical BJJ Gi (which includes a jacket, pants, and a belt) is preferred. But for Trial Members, clean and comfortable athletic wear like a t-shirt and shorts is sufficient. Under Armour material and sweatpants are acceptable as well. Please no zippers/buttons, and no cut-off sleeves or tank tops.
